Product Review
Elliptical trainers provide an effective cardiovascular workout that combines upper and lower body flexibility and coordination into one impact-free motion. By emulating the natural motion of your foot while supporting your heel throughout the stride, elliptical trainers are much easier on your knees and joints. In addition to feeling more natural while working out, regular use on ellipticals will increase heart and lung capacity while improving your health (and burning calories at the same time).
In addition to accommodating a wide variety of users with its lengthened 18 inch/46 centimeter stride, the Schwinn 418 Elliptical Trainer also incorporates an articulating footplate, which follows the natural motion of your foot and supports your heel throughout the entire stride motion. Additional features of Schwinn's 418 Elliptical Trainer include a grip heart-rate monitoring and a high-inertia drive system using an oversized flywheel and Poly V-belt. The quiet magnetic resistance Eddy Current Brake provides a smooth ride. The more than ten workout programs include: rolling, valley, fat burn, ramp, plateau, intervals, mountain, heart rate, and manual mode. An LCD display shows time, speed, distance, revolutions per minute, resistance level, calories and calories per hour, load, and heart rate and course profile.

About Elliptical Trainers Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.
Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.
Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

A Good and Simple Exercise Machine,

In the two weeks I have used the Schwinn 418 Elliptical Trainer I have been quite happy with its performance. Its magnetic friction keeps the machine quiet so others in the house don't complain about the noise. The motion is silk smooth and still provides a good workout.
Why not 5 stars? First, the one of the footpads came broken and I have had to order a new one (machine is still usable of course). And second, the instructions are unclear about using the control panel. I have been learning how to use it through trial and error.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Schwinn 418 Elliptical Trainer [Discontinued] (Sports)
I purchased the 418 from Amazon after finding that this was the Consumer Reports Best Buy, and rated number two on their review list. Intermingled with the several thousand dollar units was the Schwinn, MSRP of $1200. Amazon had it for $799 w/ free shipping, a bit more than other retailers, but they weren't offering free shipping, so the price difference became a dollar.
The unit was delivered within a couple weeks, handled by a bulk transport company. They were very cordial, called 15 minutes prior to arrival so I could leave the office to meet them at the house. It is a threshold delivery, so they unloaded it from the pallet off the truck and left it in my garage. I unboxed it in the garage and carried the pieces to my basement, and began assembly. The directions are about as expected for a device like this. However, I ran into a big problem, I was missing the console mast assembly (large upright piece that the display goes on). So we called the Schwinn customer support...Read more

This review is from: Schwinn 418 Elliptical Trainer [Discontinued] (Sports)
I purchased a Schwinn 418 Elliptical Trainer in April of 2005 after reading about it in the January, 2005 Consumer Reports magazine. I purchased from Amazon through a third party vendor and paid significantly more than what it is selling for now. After reading the comments on here mentioning worries about quality control, I wanted to assure people that, two years later, my machine is working just as well as it did the day I installed it. I use the machine religiously for 45 minutes a day five days a week, and my wife uses it, too, though not as regularly. It is virtually silent, smooth, and dependable. The ONLY problems I have with it are two: 1) Every now and then, for no real reason, the display messes up on the machine and displays too dark of an image. I simply unplug the machine, wait about 10 seconds, and plug it back in again. Everything works fine. 2) In 23 months I've had to tighten the bolts holding the machine together probably four or five times. Every few months or so the...Read more
